Premium pre-owned vs new: why buying pre-owned is the smartest decision

8 April 2026

Think buying pre-owned is risky?

So did I, before joining Relab. Then I saw the numbers. And ever since, I can't buy new anymore.

The numbers that scare (and will save you a lot)

You lose 30-40% of value from day one

It's a fact: buy a new iPhone at 9,000 DH and watch it fall to 5,500-6,000 DH after 6 months. That's the real loss.

Buy pre-owned? You've already taken that 30% hit.

What does that mean for you?

If you buy a new iPhone 14 (8,500 DH) and resell it after 18 months:

  • You resell it for 4,500-5,000 DH max
  • Real loss: 3,500-4,000 DH
  • Real cost per month: ~200 DH

If you buy a pre-owned Grade A iPhone 14 (4,500 DH) from Relab and resell it 18 months later:

  • You resell it for 3,200-3,500 DH
  • Real loss: 1,000-1,300 DH
  • Real cost per month: ~60 DH

You save 140 DH per month by buying pre-owned. With the warranty and the same performance.

But it's less safe, right?

I get the fear. Really.

At Relab, here's how we handle safety:

Our 55 check points (no, we're not exaggerating)

We don't take a device, wipe it down, and put it on sale. Every device goes through:

1. Screen test, pixel by pixel

2. Battery test (health, charge cycles)

3. Camera test (lenses, autofocus, flash)

4. Microphone test

5. Speaker test

6. Physical button test

7. Sensor test (gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer)

8. Connectivity test (WiFi, Bluetooth, 4G/5G)

9. Professional cleaning

10. Full reset

11. Test of every iOS/Android feature

12. Verification of the original device (not stolen, not locked, not blocked)

And we repeat everything.

The result? You receive a phone that works BETTER than a new phone bought at random in a store.

1-year warranty vs 0 days

Apple (new): 1-year warranty.

Relab (pre-owned): 1-year warranty too.

The difference: if your pre-owned iPhone has a problem, we replace it. No questions asked. Even the camera.

On new devices, you tell yourself "oh, a small speaker issue, it's fine". You accept it. On pre-owned, zero compromise.

The environmental side nobody counts

Buying new = manufacturing new = 100kg of CO2 for 1 phone.

Buying pre-owned = reusing = 40kg of CO2 saved per phone.

Sounds like little? Not at all.

If 1 million Moroccans bought pre-owned instead of new, we'd save 60 million kg of CO2 per year.

That's equivalent to planting 1 million trees.

And you'd do that just by buying a cheaper phone? That's crazy.

The "risks" people mention (and why they're wrong)

"What if it's overpriced?"

Wrong. A pre-owned Grade A iPhone 14 at Relab costs 4,500 DH max. The same one new? 8,500 DH.

"What if it's slow?"

Impossible. We test every device. If there's an issue, it doesn't leave our lab.

"What if the battery dies in 2 months?"

Covered by the 1-year warranty. We replace it for free. Zero cost for you.

"What if I want to resell it?"

You resell it for almost what we sold it to you for (see the calculation above).

Who picks new in 2026, seriously?

People who:

  • Have an unlimited budget (probably not you)
  • Want the very latest generation on day 1 (but for what?)
  • Like losing 30% of value in 6 months

Everyone else picks premium pre-owned.

The real question

Not "Is pre-owned safe?"

But "Why would I pay 4,000 DH more for exactly the same thing?"

And frankly, I don't have an answer.
