Pre-owned MacBooks: a trap or the deal of the century?
Honest answer: It's the deal of the century if you know what you're looking for.
After selling more than 800 pre-owned MacBooks at Relab, here is what we've learned.
The MacBooks to buy without hesitation in 2026
MacBook Air M1 (13 or 15 inch) 🌟 Best value for performance
- Pre-owned price: 6,500-8,500 DH
- New price: 12,000+ DH
- Savings: 40-45%
Real power: 4K YouTube video? OK. Photoshop with 20 layers? OK. Unity? OK. It's a beast for the price.
MacBook Pro 14" M2/M3 (If you do pro work)
- Pre-owned price: 9,000-11,000 DH
- New price: 15,000+ DH
- Screen: 120Hz ProMotion (smooth like never before)
- Fans: Active cooling for heavy workloads
Real power: 8K video, pro multitrack audio, 3D rendering. A true pro machine.
Watch out: the models to AVOID
- Intel i7/i9 (before 2020) → Old, slow, weak battery
- MacBook Air 2022 M2 base model → Thermal throttling (slows down under load)
- MacBook Pro 16" 2016 → Too old, worn-out battery, expensive repairs
Checklist before you buy (the points we check at Relab, among our 55 checkpoints)
Battery (This is the most important thing)
Open Terminal and type:
system_profiler SPPowerDataType | grep -i health
You'll see "Normal" or "Check Battery". If it says Check Battery, walk away.
A worn-out battery on a MacBook = 2,500 DH of repairs at Apple.
What we look for: A battery at 80%+ of capacity.
Screen
- Dead pixels? Look on a white background.
- Cracks? Gently feel the edges.
- Even lighting? Look on a black background in the dark.
- Stains? On a white background, fingerprints/dust don't count, yellow stains do.
Keyboard
- Does every key work? Press each one.
- No "key sticking"? (A key that stays pressed down)
- Responsive trackpad? Sometimes it's a software issue (easy to fix).
SMC battery (What is it?)
Apple charges devices before shipping them. If the MacBook hasn't been used for 6 months, the CMOS battery runs flat and... the device forgets the time. It sounds silly but it means "never used, left in stock".
How to check: Is the time correct? No dead CMOS battery.
USB-C port and charger
- The charger works (no weird overheating)
- The device charges (no "not charging", "not charging - service recommended")
- The ports recognize peripherals (plug in a mouse, an external SSD)
What we check on every MacBook
Every MacBook sold at Relab goes through our 55 checkpoints: battery, screen, keyboard, trackpad, ports, camera, sound, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Battery health is shown on the product page, and you can ask for a new battery as an option (+300 DH).
Prices

Which MacBook for which use in 2026?
You write, you browse, you watch Netflix
→ MacBook Air M1 (~7,500 DH)
It's MORE than enough. Honestly. Don't spend more.
You do design, Figma, Photoshop, YouTube video
→ MacBook Air M1 or M3 (~8,500-9,000 DH)
The M3 is 20% faster, but mostly on compiles and exports. For your daily workflow? Zero difference.
You do 3D rendering, 4K video, pro audio
→ MacBook Pro 14" M3 Pro (~10,500-11,000 DH)
Active fans make a big difference. Your fans no longer spin at 9000 RPM.
You do 8K video rendering, machine learning, heavy development
→ MacBook Pro 14" or 16" M3 Max (~12,000-13,500 DH)
The extra GPU really makes the difference here.
Known issues to be aware of
The M1/M2 doesn't hit 5GHz, is that normal?
Yes. Apple chips don't boost their frequencies. It's an intentional design for efficiency. It looks slow on paper, but it's 2x faster than an equivalent Intel.
The MacBook Air M1 has "thermal throttling"... is that serious?
No. There is only one use in 2026 where it really matters: 8K video rendering.
For 99% of uses, zero problem.
Why does my new MacBook Air run hotter than an old Intel?
The MacBook Air M1, M2 and M3 have no fan: they dissipate heat through the chassis, which is normal.
The battery: what you need to know
The battery health of every MacBook is shown on its product page. If the battery doesn't work properly during the 12-month warranty, we replace it. Prefer to start with a new battery? It's available as an option (+300 DH).
Where to buy: the real traps
❌ Marketplace (Facebook, OLX, etc.)
- No warranty
- No tests
- No recourse if it's stolen
- Price often higher than in a store ("I have friends who sell")
❌ Nameless "repair-and-resell" shops
- Random tests
- Worn batteries not replaced
- A warranty that doesn't exist when there's a problem
- No physical address
✅ Relab (Obviously, I work there)
- 55+ checkpoints
- Battery health shown, new battery as an option
- 12-month warranty
- Local after-sales service
- Quick exchange if there's a problem
The real deal on pre-owned MacBooks
Buy from someone who really tests them.
A badly tested pre-owned MacBook? It can spoil 2 years of your work.
A well-tested pre-owned MacBook? That's 5-6 years of peace of mind.
The difference? 30 extra minutes of diagnostics.
So yes, our price is 15-20% higher than OLX. But you sleep well.
